DESCRIPTION
Royal Red is a majestic looking Norway maple for large gardens, parks, and city avenues. Its palmate leaves are dark crimson red, almost black, and glossy, turning orange-red in autumn. In the spring, just as leaves emerge, it flowers profusely with many small yellow flowers, typical for many Norway maples.
This tree is a big dude, offering a strong colour into an overall green situation. It does not grow too fast but owing to its large size in maturity it deserves being planted sensibly so that your grandchildren do not have use a chain-saw to shape it up. The crown is dense and casts a deep shade.
It is very similar to another red-leaved variety Crimson King. Royal Red is only a bit darker and the leaves are allegedly less prone to summer attacks of powdery mildew. Grow it in any well-drained soil. Wind and air-pollution tolerant. Fully hardy to -40°C (USDA zone 3).
